Florida BEST Standard MA.3.NSO.1.1 Misconceptions
One common misconception with place value is students not conceptualizing the value of a digit within a number. Base ten blocks and place value disc are a great way for students to overcome this misconception. If you don’t have access to these resources, then make an anchor chart with the value of the place values on display for students to reference throughout the lesson. Encourage students to draw place value disc to build their understanding of place values.

Suggested Manipulatives
I highly recommend teaching place value in a concrete way that leads to conceptual understanding.
- Base ten blocks are a great visual for students to help them learn the value of each digit. I like this set because it includes the thousands cube. I use the block to introduce the concept to my students, but it can get expensive to represent larger numbers with multiple thousands.
- Place value disc are also a great cost-effective option. There is a greater variety with the place values, from one to millions. Each set also has 280 pieces so if you purchase a few sets there should be enough for your students to get their hands on the disc while exploring the lesson.
- DIY Place Value Mats-Put a piece of card stock in a sheet protector and give students a dry erase marker. The dollar store has ones with erasers attached which is awesome. Students can draw place value charts on their DIY place value mats to help them during a lesson. Also saves time if students only have to draw the place value chart once and can switch out the numbers.
